Direct Thermal Printing
Direct thermal printing uses heat to register an impression on paper. A thermal printer has a print head that on contact, burns dots onto speacial coated paper. Low cost and easily managed as there is no ink, toner or ribbons required, just the special paper!
Duty Cycle
The Maximum pages which can be printed per month. High duty cycles are around 20,000 pages/month. Low cycles are 500 or less pages/month
Inkjet
Inkjet technology prints documents, graphic images and photographs. THey can print in colour or black only. They create an image by firing ink droplets onto the page. They are best suited to print very high quality images, and fall into the low duty cycle category
Laser
Laser technology prints documents and graphic images in colour or black only. They create an image by fixing carbon based powder (toner) to the paper. Laser units are usually robust, quick to print, and print medium to high duty cycles
Multifunction Printers
This terminology is used to describe a unit which comprises of multiple functions.
Thermal Transfer
Thermal transfer technology is very low duty cycle, predominantly seen on low end fax machines. The thermal unit pinpoints heat through a thermal ribbon to leave an image on the page

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are usually used as a light source for a small area such as a power on button
MB
MB is short for megabyte which is a unit of information or storage equal to 1024 kilobytes
Modem
Modem is the common name for modulator-demodulator. Modems are used to carry an analogue signal to encode digital information
Network Ready
The machine has the function to be placed on a network for multiple users
PPM
Page per minute (PPM) is the term usually used for the speed of a printer or copier
